FAQs

Your comfort should never be compromised. We’re dedicated to ensuring that you always have access to quality heating oil to keep your home warm and inviting – no matter the weather.

GENERAL HVAC QUESTIONS

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

We recommend twice a year—once in the spring for your air conditioning and once in the fall for your heating system. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance, lower energy costs, and a longer lifespan for your system.

If your system is over 10-15 years old, needs frequent repairs, or isn’t heating or cooling effectively, it may be time for an upgrade. New systems are more energy-efficient, reducing your utility bills while keeping your home comfortable.

The right size depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, and layout. Our professionals conduct a load calculation to recommend the perfect system that provides efficient heating and cooling without wasting energy.

  • Schedule regular maintenance to keep components clean and working properly.

  • Change air filters every 1-3 months.

  • Seal duct leaks and insulate your home.

  • Use a programmable thermostat to optimize energy use.

  • Upgrade to an energy-efficient system if your current one is outdated.

In the summer, set it to 78°F when home and 85°F when away.

In the winter, set it to 68°F when home and lower when sleeping or away.

A smart thermostat can automatically adjust temperatures for maximum savings.

Unusual sounds can indicate:

  • Banging/clanking – Loose or broken parts.
  • Hissing – Possible refrigerant leak or duct leak.
  • Squealing – Worn-out belts or motor issues.
  • Clicking – Electrical relay problems.
If you hear strange noises, schedule a professional inspection to prevent further damage. You can also see our full list of Troubleshooting Tips here.

HEATING SYSTEM QUESTIONS

What type of heating system is best for my home?

The best heating system depends on your home’s size, insulation, and budget. We offer:

  • Furnaces (gas, oil, or electric) – Ideal for whole-home heating with ductwork.
  • Boilers – Efficient, even heat distribution using radiators or in-floor heating.
  • Heat Pumps – Energy-efficient heating and cooling in one system.
  • Ductless Mini-Splits – Great for homes without ductwork.

Possible reasons include:

  • A dirty air filter blocking airflow.
  • A pilot light or ignition failure.
  • Thermostat settings set incorrectly.
  • A clogged or leaking duct.
  • Low fuel levels if you use an oil or propane system.

If your system isn’t producing heat, schedule a service call to diagnose the issue. You can also see our full list of Troubleshooting Tips here.

Every 1-3 months for standard filters.

More frequently if you have pets, allergies, or a dusty environment. A clean filter improves efficiency and air quality.

  • Check the thermostat – Make sure it’s set to “heat” and at the correct temperature.
  • Inspect the circuit breaker – A tripped breaker may need resetting.
  • Check your fuel supply – If you use oil or propane, ensure you have fuel.
  • Look for error codes on your system.

If troubleshooting doesn’t work, call us for an emergency repair.

OIL TANK QUESTIONS

My company has recommended a new oil tank or new oil lines. Are these really necessary?
Oil tanks were never meant to last for the life of the house. If your technician has recommended an oil tank replacement or line repair, here are some reasons why:
  • Corrosion – This is one of the most common causes of oil tank failure.
    • Empty or Near-Empty Tanks: When oil tanks are not kept full, there is more empty space above the oil level. This empty space, or headspace, is filled with air, which contains moisture. Temperature fluctuations, especially in steel tanks, can cause this moisture to condense on the inner walls of the tank. This condensation collects at the bottom of the tank, where it can cause corrosion.
    • Rust Formation: The presence of both water and oxygen in the tank headspace creates ideal conditions for steel tanks to corrode. Over time, this can lead to rust formation.
    • Microbial Growth: Water accumulation can also encourage the growth of microorganisms, like bacteria and fungi, which can further contribute to corrosion
  • Rust and dents — Dents and gouges can, in some cases, affect the structural integrity of the tank.
  • Wet spots— The presence of wet spots, discoloration, or solid drips commonly called “stalagtites,” either underneath the tank or on its surface, are indicators that a tank replacement is needed.
  • Unstable legs— In many cases, problems with an oil tank will be the result of faulty installation. A dead giveaway of this issue is when the legs appear uneven, in which case the tank would have trouble functioning at its full capacity. If the legs appear unstable in any way, have the tank inspected immediately.
  • Exposure to frosty elements— If the tank is outside your house, or situated in an area where winter conditions like snow and ice could make their way into the tank, have the tank inspected regularly. (HINT: Clearing snow from underneath the tank after a storm will also help prevent rust.)
  • Faulty vent alarm— If the tank features a vent alarm, yet you don’t hear a sound when you fill the tank, it’s a sign of malfunction that should be professionally serviced.
  • Oil runs— If stray oil is present anywhere near the tank — particularly on the ground underneath — you probably have a leak.
  • Unprotected oil lines— Inspect the lines that carry oil between the tank and the furnace. If they are severely kinked, cracked, or have pinhole leaks, call for service.
  • Pipe clogs— If the vent pipes are clogged due to infestation or wintry elements, have them cleaned as soon as possible.
  • Oil inefficiency— If you’re using oil faster than necessary, it may be a good idea to have the tank and lines inspected for leaks or other issues.

A good rule of thumb is to begin budgeting for a replacement every 15-20 years.

The best course of action is to be proactive! When temperatures begin to fall:

  • Install electrically powered heat tape around your oil line.
  • If you already have heat tape, test the system to ensure that it is working.
  • Add denatured alcohol or fuel additive to your tank with each fill. (We can provide an additive at extra cost if desired.)
  • Maintain as constant of a temperature as possible around the oil lines and oil tank.
  • If you are a will call customer, don’t wait until you are out of oil to call! More moisture equals more problems.

AIR CONDITIONING QUESTIONS

How often should I have my air conditioner serviced?

We recommend once a year, in the spring, to check refrigerant levels, clean coils, and ensure peak efficiency.

Possible reasons include:

  • A dirty air filter restricting airflow.
  • Low refrigerant levels from a leak.
  • A blocked condenser unit from dirt or debris.
  • Duct leaks allowing cool air to escape.

With proper maintenance, an AC unit lasts 12-15 years. Upgrading to a high-efficiency model can reduce energy costs.

  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Dirty coils or filters blocking airflow
  • Faulty blower motor

Turn off the system and let it thaw before calling for a service check.

Check our Troubleshooting Tips here.

No, covering the unit can trap moisture and cause rust or mold. Instead, clear away leaves and debris and use a breathable top cover only.
